Sonosite representatives joined Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) at Audley End House in Essex on the 25th June as the charity celebrated its 20th anniversary and unveiled its rebranded fleet – including the first public appearance of its recently purchased Augusta Westland AW169 helicopter – at an open day attended by 3,000 people. The spacious new helicopter, one of two operated by EHAAT, offers virtually 360 degree patient access and is equipped with highly specialised and advanced life-saving equipment, including point-of-care ultrasound for management of cardiac arrest and advanced life support.

EHAAT is equipped with five FUJIFILM Sonosite iViz systems, which are an ideal size for use on the aircraft or at the scene of an emergency. Vanessa Wickens, UK Education Manager and Clinical Apps Lead for FUJIFILM Sonosite, said: “We work closely with EHAAT, helping to train its critical care paramedics in the use of point-of-care ultrasound....

Point-of-care ultrasound is used daily to help assess and treat patients in the emergency department.

London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital relies on point-of-care ultrasound to help assess and treat patients in its emergency department. EMED consultant Dr Parmy Deol explained: “The emergency department uses ultrasound on a daily basis for FAST scanning, central line placement, echocardiograms and to check for free abdominal fluid in trauma patients, and occasionally also for guiding therapy in critically ill patients, draining abscesses and locating foreign bodies. As well as using ultrasound in our clinical practice, two colleagues and I supervise junior trainees learning to use ultrasound, helping them to achieve the level 1 proficiency that is now a mandatory part of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine curriculum.”

“Our point-of-care ultrasound system – a FUJIFILM Sonosite X-Porte ® – is very robust, which is important in a busy department where equipment is moved...

Point-of-care ultrasound plays an important role in the management of cardiac arrest.

Dr. Matthew Reed, an Emergency Medicine consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, explains why Sonosite ultrasound is used to help shorten the path to treatment for cardiac arrest victims in emergency and pre-hospital medicine.

We know that the prognosis for a patient with a beating heart is far better than for someone in cardiac standstill. Using ultrasound, we can see whether or not a patient remains in cardiac standstill following a period of intensive resuscitation, and may also be able to identify a previously undetected pathology – such as cardiac tamponade or ventricular fibrillation – that was not visible on the ECG. Ultrasound can also help to guide the most appropriate course of action, for example, unblocking a coronary artery in the cath lab, aggressive treatment of alternative causes of cardiac arrest, or...

A training exercise gives doctors and paramedics a feel for using point-of-care ultrasound in challenging environments

Emergency teams have recently carried out a training exercise at the vast Stuttgart 21 construction project, using the experience to become more familiar with the site and practice with routine equipment in tunnels as far down as 40 metres, preparing them as much as possible for future emergency calls to the area. Stuttgart 21 is a massive building project based around the main railway station that will result in the current terminus becoming a through station, and a new line connecting directly to Ulm. In total, around 60 km of railway tunnels will be built under the city – over 20 km have already been completed – and, according to current estimates, the project is scheduled to finish in 2021.
