“I can already see other situations where it may help us in the future. Regional nerve blocks could replace intravenous pain relief in an emergency setting. You could, for instance, numb just the shoulder nerves in order to reset a dislocated shoulder. The iViz lets you see all the affected nerves and vessels easily. Ten years from now, I expect that all emergency medical cars like ours will be equipped with portable ultrasound systems. The information we get from it is so significant – nobody will want to miss out”.

"The picture quality, color Doppler and ease-of-use convinced me that the quality of ultrasound had changed quickly over the years and I needed a new system. It made sense to have a portable device that was more comfortable to carry with me; I chose a Sonosite iViz system and am now using ultrasound a lot more."

FUJIFILM Sonosite has contributed to the medical recovery efforts, and Dr. Tirado sent us an update on his work with medical patients on the island. He is being escorted by helicopter to the most at-need regions and in the image below he is using the Sonosite iViz to perform a FAST scan on a patient.

"At the end of 2015, we began a pilot study – Pre-hospital Assessment Rotterdam Aortic Aneurysm (PARA2) – to evaluate pre-hospital assessment of the abdominal aorta using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). FUJIFILM Sonosite provided two hand-carried ultrasound systems and, together with an emergency physician with extensive POCUS experience, trained three ambulance nurses and two nurse practitioners to scan the abdominal aorta. It quickly became part of our daily routine to scan patients’ aortas, gaining as much practice as possible. As nurse practitioners, we also received more advanced training in point-of-care ultrasound, including Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST), to allow additional conditions to be triaged.”

“We contacted FUJIFILM Sonosite, explaining what we were doing and why, and the company lent us an Sonosite iViz system for the project, which was ideal as its lightweight and small size made it easy to carry around in a bag. Another consideration before we left for Madagascar was how to recharge the system’s batteries. We knew that we would not have access to power during the trip, and so we contacted a gentleman from Mobile Solar Chargers Ltd who had experience of using this technology in developing countries. He was very excited by what we were doing and kindly made some solar panels that could be used. We took six batteries with us, which allowed us to work right through the day, and then we recharged them overnight from the power generated by the solar panels”.
