For Dr. Anshuman Mishra, Director and Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at Yatharth Super Specialty Hospital in Greater Noida, point-of-care ultrasound [POCUS] has become an integral tool for supporting clinical decision-making in modern anesthesia and perioperative care.

With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Mishra has expertise in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, perioperative pain management, percutaneous tracheostomy, and airway management. He has been utilizing ultrasound in his clinical practice since 2005, and remains actively engaged in teaching, research, and ultrasound education.

Integrating POCUS into Clinical Practice

As shared by Dr. Mishra, "POCUS provides real-time bedside information that helps support patient assessment and management in the perioperative setting."

Dr. Mishra uses the FUJIFILM Sonosite SII and Sonosite ZX point-of-care ultrasound systems in his routine clinical practice as per their approved CDSCO intended use.

Clinical applications where POCUS assists Dr. Mishra include:

  • Support for ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks and assessment of neuraxial anatomy
  • Support for perioperative pain management procedures
  • Support for ultrasound-guided vascular access
  • Focused cardiac assessment and volume status assessment
  • Lung ultrasound for assessment of pleural effusion, suspected pneumothorax and hemothorax
  • Support for e-FAST assessment and focused assessment for DVT

All procedures are performed as per institutional protocols, patient-specific clinical judgment, and appropriate training of healthcare professionals.

Supporting Informed Clinical Decisions

According to Dr. Mishra, the ability to perform repeated bedside examinations provides real-time information that may assist physicians in clinical assessment and procedural planning, when used in conjunction with standard clinical evaluation.

Advancing Ultrasound Education and Training

Beyond his clinical role, Dr. Mishra is actively involved in advancing ultrasound education. He leads a one-year AORA Fellowship Program in Regional Anesthesia and an observership program where he has trained clinicians from India and other countries.

His academic contributions include organizing and participating in scientific initiatives such as Yathartcon 2024 and 2026, POCUS@KDH 2023, CIPSA at Apollo Medics Lucknow, and activities of CRAB and the Special Interest Group for Fascial Plane Blocks.

Through his clinical and academic work, Dr. Mishra highlights the evolving role of POCUS as an adjunct tool to support clinical assessment, procedural guidance, and perioperative care.
