Regulatory documents for both individual devices and SonoSite’s quality management system are available.

United States/Canada

The 510(k) pre-market notification process is the most common method used in the United States for describing the design and manufacture of medical devices which the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses to determine a "substantial equivalence" decision to authorize marketing of a medical device within the United States.

The Canadian regulatory process for determining safety and effectiveness of medical devices is managed by Health Canada’s Therapeutic Products Directorate.

European Union

To place a medical device on the market within the European Union, CE marking of the device is required and the manufacturer must comply with European Union Medical Device Directive (MDD) - Council Directive 93/42/EEC of 14 June 1993 concerning medical products as amended by 2007/47/EC. SonoSite maintains technical documentation files (TDF) on each device covered by CE marking. The TDF is made available to the notified body or national authorities for Conformity Assessments according to MDD 93/42/EEC Annex II, MDD 93/42/EEC Annex V or MDD 93/42/EEC Annex IX.

For each SonoSite device marketed within the European Union SonoSite prepares a declaration of conformity with the MDD and applies CE marking. For other countries, outside of the European Union, additional documentation is available.

The links below provide copies of declarations of conformity for each product listed.

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in France
North of Paris
France

Under the French Decree on the Prevention and Management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which came into force on August 13th 2005, the financing of collection and recycling of any waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) arising from equipment bought before August 13th 2005 is the customer’s responsibility. This is regardless of whether the equipment is being replaced by a new piece of equipment from SonoSite. Equipment purchased before August 13th 2005 is referred to as Historic WEEE.

Under the Decree, SonoSite is required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from them after August 13th 2005, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as New WEEE.

SonoSite products are very competitively priced. Any new increase in operating costs for manufacturers such as SonoSite is normally reflected in a price increase in the product. However, instead of increasing the prices of our products, SonoSite has decided to share these new environmental costs directly with our customers. We believe in being transparent with you on any new environmental costs that our products need to address.

Our approach to sharing these new environmental costs is:
  • SonoSite pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the Decree.
  • SonoSite pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the Decree.
  •  you pay for transportation of your WEEE to SonoSite’s appointed recycler in France.

SonoSite has established a recycling contract with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the equipment on arrival at the EARN facility in France. All New WEEE that arises from the purchase of SonoSite products is classed as non-hazardous waste.

It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs of collection and transportation to EARN. Under Decree 98-679 1998 Relating to Road Transport, the Trade and the Broking of Waste, you are free to use any carrier you wish to collect and transport non-hazardous WEEE to the EARN recycler, providing the total weight of equipment to be transported is less than 500 kg.

For larger quantities of waste you may wish to contact the recycler directly in order to arrange and pay for an alternative collection method. The SonoSite recyclers in France are:

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in Spain
Spain

Under the Spanish Royal Decree 208/2005 on Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Management of its Waste which came into force on August 13th 2005, for equipment that you buy from SonoSite after August 13th 2005, SonoSite is required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that your new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The old equipment that your new purchase from SonoSite replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE.

Under the Decree, SonoSite is also required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from SonoSite after August 13th 2005, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste.

  • SonoSite pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the General Directorate of Quality and Environmental Assessment of the Ministry of the Environment to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the Decree.
  • you pay for transportation of your WEEE to SonoSite’s appointed recycler in Spain.

SonoSite has established a recycling contract with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the equipment on arrival at the EARN facility in Spain. All New WEEE that arises from the purchase of SonoSite products is classed as non-hazardous waste.

It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs of collection and transportation to EARN. Under Spanish waste management procedures, you are free to use any carrier you wish to collect and transport non-hazardous WEEE to the EARN recycler, providing the weight of equipment to be transported is less than 1000 kg.

For larger quantities of waste you may wish to contact the recycler directly in order to arrange and pay for an alternative collection method. The SonoSite recyclers in Spain are:
