Kevin M. Goodwin, President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Goodwin has led SonoSite since its spin-off from ATL Ultrasound in April 1998. He joined ATL in 1987 in sales and was promoted to vice president and general manager for ATL's business in Asia Pacific, Latin America, Australia, and Canada (APLAC) in 1991. From 1997 until the spin-off, Mr. Goodwin was vice president and general manager of ATL Ultrasound's Handheld Systems Business Group. Mr. Goodwin began his career in medical products with American Hospital Supply Corporation as a national distribution manager, followed by a position with Picker International as area manager for the southeastern United States. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Monmouth College of Illinois, with an emphasis on hospital management, and completed the Executive Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
John S. Bowers, Jr., Senior Vice President, Strategic Development and Patient Safety Innovations
Mr. Bowers joined SonoSite in September 2009 and is responsible for driving patient safety initiatives and directing corporate development activities to identify growth strategies for point-of-care ultrasound. He has more than 20 years of experience in the medical technology industry, holding a number of general management, business development, and sales management leadership roles. Most recently, Mr. Bowers served as the president and CEO of Northstar Neuroscience, Inc., a medical device company specializing in the development of treatments for neurological diseases and disorders. Prior to Northstar, he spent 14 years at Guidant Corporation and Eli Lilly in management positions of increasing responsibility. Mr. Bowers holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics-Accounting from Gonzaga University and earned his M.B.A from Harvard University.
James N. Branman, Vice President, Sales, Cardiovascular Disease Management
Mr. Branman has held sales management positions at SonoSite since 2001 and was appointed to vice president of sales of the cardiovascular disease management division in July 2009. Prior to this position, Mr. Branman served as the vice president of U.S. sales for SonoSite and as a business Director for the Western region. Mr. Branman's career spans 18 years of increasing responsibility in sales and sales management in the medical technology industry, 16 of which are in ultrasound. He began his career as an ultrasound sales representative for Corometrics Medical Systems in 1991 and, among other companies, worked for GE Medical Systems and ATL Ultrasound, Inc. Mr. Branman holds a bachelor of science degree in history with a minor in political science from Illinois State University.
Anne M. Bugge, Vice President, Global Public Health
Ms. Bugge joined SonoSite in 2005 as vice president of corporate affairs and was responsible for SonoSite's corporate marketing and investor communications worldwide. She was appointed to her current position in October 2009 to lead the company’s initiatives in the developing world. Prior to SonoSite, Ms. Bugge worked with the EVC Group, an investor and corporate communications firm specializing in advising small cap companies. She also served as vice president of corporate and investor relations for ATL Ultrasound, Inc. from 1987 until its acquisition by Philips Medical Systems in 1998. Ms. Bugge received a bachelor's degree in journalism from Michigan State University, continued academic studies at the University of Oslo, and completed the Executive Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
Graham D. Cox, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Market Development
Mr. Cox joined SonoSite in 1999 and was promoted from vice president of international sales to senior vice president of worldwide sales and distribution in 2008. In his current capacity, Mr. Cox is responsible for all SonoSite sales channels including direct operations, dealers and enterprise relationships. During his tenure at SonoSite, Mr. Cox has overseen the establishment of SonoSite's 10 direct sales subsidiaries and a distribution network into 100 countries. Mr. Cox has been involved with the ultrasound industry and worked for ATL Ultrasound and Philips Medical Systems and Acuson Corporation, now part of Siemens Medical Solutions prior to joining SonoSite. Mr. Cox received an electronic engineering degree and holds an Executive MBA from the International Management Centers Association.
Ronald S. Dickson, Vice President, Government and Corporate Accounts
Mr. Dickson joined SonoSite in 1999 as a regional sales director and was vice president of sales from 2000 to 2002. He was involved with SonoSite when it was a business group within ATL Ultrasound and served as ATL's liaison to the U.S. military in the evaluation of the early system prototype. At ATL Ultrasound from 1984 until 1999, Mr. Dickson served in various roles with increasing responsibility, including sales representative, regional sales manager, and government accounts manager. Prior to ATL, Mr. Dickson was a sales representative for United States Surgical Corporation. He attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.
Richard Gaevert, Vice President, Quality and Service
Mr. Gaevert was one of the first SonoSite employees after the company's spin-off from ATL Ultrasound, Inc. Initially joining as a manager and then promoted to director of operations to oversee the manufacturing relationship with ATL, Mr. Gaevert was subsequently responsible for designing and opening SonoSite's manufacturing facility. From 1989 to 1998, as an ATL employee, Mr. Gaevert served in a variety of engineering, program management, and operations management roles. At SonoSite, Mr. Gaevert also had the responsibilities of managing new product implementation, service operations, transducer manufacturing, and the pick-and-pack process. He was promoted to his current position in 2008 and is responsible for creating and sustaining corporate mechanisms to drive quality improvements throughout product life cycles. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington.
Jim Gilmore, Senior Vice President Product Innovation and Delivery
Mr. Gilmore rejoined SonoSite in 2006. Previously, he served as global engineering manager for global ultrasound probes at GE Healthcare, where he was responsible for all aspects of product definition, design, development and manufacturing engineering support of diagnostic ultrasound transducers. Mr. Gilmore was one of the original engineers at SonoSite when the company spun off from ATL Ultrasound in 1998. He served as the director of transducer engineering for six years. He was honored as an ATL Technical Fellow for innovation and technical leadership and is named as an inventor on three patents for transducer technology. Mr. Gilmore received both his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and his master's degree in biomedical engineering from Drexel University.
Juin-Jet Hwang, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer
Dr. Hwang is one of SonoSite's original founding employees and is responsible for the development of corporate technology strategy. He joined ADR Ultrasound in 1980, where he was involved in the development of the ADR 4000 system, a portable array imaging system (ADR Ultrasound merged with ATL Ultrasound in 1983). Dr. Hwang served as chief scientist in ATL's Handheld Systems Business Group until its spin-off in April 1998. Dr. Hwang holds 34 patents and is the author of more than 30 scientific publications. He was honored as an ATL Technical Fellow in Perpetuity in 1988. He holds a master's degree from the National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, both in electrical engineering.
Cory E. Klatt, Chief of Commercial Operations Worldwide
Mr. Klatt joined SonoSite in May 2008 and is responsible for driving innovation and operational efficiencies across the front-end of the business, leading information technology, marketing, and sales operations. He has a successful track record founding innovative technology ventures resulting in an IPO and several acquisitions. As principal and CTO of Parallel Communications, he designed and deployed the first web-2-print solution. The company was sold to MPLII in 1995. Mr. Klatt then co-founded and served as chief technology officer for ImageX until its acquisition by FedEx Kinko's in 2003, where he served as vice president of technology, commercial printing at FedEx Kinko's until 2005. He then subsequently founded and served as president and CEO at X6 Technologies, a 1:1 marketing solutions company until its acquisition in 2008.
Marla R. Koreis, Vice President, Chief Administration Officer
Ms. Koreis joined SonoSite in 2003. From 1999 to 2003, she was director of human resources for ImageX, a business-to-business Internet printing company. From 1994 to 1998, Ms. Koreis was the human resources executive at SeaMed Corporation, a manufacturer of custom products for the medical device industry. From 1984 to 1994, she served as a human resources manager at several high-tech and healthcare companies. She holds a bachelor's degree from Western Washington University.
David Levesque, Vice President, Market Development, Cardiovascular Disease Management
Mr. Levesque was appointed to vice president of market development of cardiovascular disease management in July 2009. He joined SonoSite in 2004 as vice president of global learning. Prior to SonoSite, Mr. Levesque was the director of training and education at ATL Ultrasound (later Philips Medical Systems) for 13 years. During that time, he was responsible for the development and implementation of sales training initiatives and strategies designed to improve sales effectiveness and impact sales results. Mr. Levesque also created dynamic customer education programs and led the development of self-directed web-based learning for clinicians globally. He has been in the medical imaging business since 1979 and holds a bachelor’s degree from California State University Stanislaus and a master's degree from the University of Iowa.
Diku Mandavia, MD, Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer
Diku Mandavia, MD, FACEP, FRCPC, joined SonoSite as a medical advisor in 2007 and currently serves as Chief Medical Officer. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Southern California and is an Attending Staff Physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Mandavia is a founding member and past-chair of the ACEP Ultrasound Section and co-author of the ACEP Ultrasound Guidelines. He has taught thousands of physicians worldwide, lectured at over 150 national and international conferences and was awarded ACEP’s Outstanding Speaker of the Year in 2004. Dr. Mandavia has also contributed to over 40 publications and is co-director of the national Resuscitation Conference. He received his medical degree from Memorial University in Canada and completed his residency at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center.
Irene Plenefisch, Vice President, Health Economics and Clinical Evidence
Ms. Plenefisch joined SonoSite during its spin-off from ATL Ultrasound, Inc. in 1998 and was promoted to her current position in 2008. In this capacity, she interfaces with healthcare policymakers in the federal government and in the private sector on ultrasound reimbursement and utilization policy and directs the company's effort to develop clinical evidence that supports the adoption of point-of-care ultrasound. From 2003 to 2007, Ms. Plenefisch was director of payer and external relations. Prior to working at SonoSite, Ms. Plenefisch held various management positions at ATL Ultrasound from 1994 until 1998. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Michael J. Schuh, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Schuh has served as CFO since joining the company in 2000 and as Treasurer since 2003. From 2000 to 2002, Mr. Schuh also served as secretary. Prior to SonoSite, Mr. Schuh was with Leasetec Corporation for 14 years where he was vice president of finance and responsible for financial control and planning for nine worldwide business units. From 1995 to 1997, he was director of strategic planning and acquisitions and organized the initiation of these operations overseas. Other management positions at Leasetec included European finance director and corporate controller. Mr. Schuh was also a senior consultant for Deloitte Haskins & Sells. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin.
Marcus Y. Smith, Vice President, General Manager, Cardiovascular Disease Management
Mr. Smith was promoted to vice president, general manager of cardiovascular disease management in July 2009. He joined SonoSite in 2007 as the Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Growth Planning. Before joining SonoSite, he was the senior director of strategy and business development with Philips Medical Systems for patient monitoring and cardiac care. From 2000 to 2003, Mr. Smith led J.P. Morgan's European logistics investment banking practice as vice president of investment banking and advised corporate and government clients on strategic alternatives in the logistics and transportation sectors. He received his bachelor's degree from Duke University and master's degrees in business administration and international affairs from Columbia University.
Kathy Surace-Smith, Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
Ms. Surace-Smith joined SonoSite in 2002. From 1996 to 2002, she was general counsel at Metawave Communications, a telecommunications equipment provider. Prior to her position at Metawave, Ms. Surace-Smith served as international counsel for Alcatel Telecom in Paris and as counsel at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London. After receiving her law degree from Columbia University, where she served as editor of the Columbia Law Review, she was in private practice with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. She received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University.
David G. Willis, Vice President, Competitive Strategy and Innovation
Mr. Willis first joined SonoSite in 1999 and was instrumental in shaping the product direction and market positioning of the company's first product, the 180 system. Mr. Willis was vice president of sales and marketing for Ultrasonix, a privately held diagnostic ultrasound company based in Canada, from 2003 until 2006 when he rejoined SonoSite in his current position. From 1989 to 1999, Mr. Willis worked at ATL Ultrasound and Philips Medical Systems, where he held positions in clinical marketing and international sales. He was also a sonographer at the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg, Canada and is a registered medical sonographer (RDMS, RDCS). He completed the Executive Education Program at the Wharton School of Business.
