About the Company / Management


Kevin M. Goodwin, President and CEO

Goodwin has led SonoSite since its spin-off from ATL Ultrasound in April 1998. He joined ATL in 1987, and was promoted to vice president and general manager for ATL's business in Asia Pacific, Latin America, Australia and Canada (APLAC). From 1997 until the spin-off, Goodwin was vice president and general manager of ATL Ultrasound's Handheld Systems Business Group. Goodwin began his career in medical products with American Hospital Supply Corporation as a national distribution manager, followed by a position with Picker International as area manager for the southeastern United States. Goodwin holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Monmouth College of Monmouth, Illinois, with an emphasis on hospital management, and completed the Stanford Executive Program, Stanford Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto, California.

Thomas J. Dugan, Senior Vice President, Global Marketing and US Sales

Dugan joined SonoSite in July 2005. Previously, Dugan was President of InterVascular, Inc., a subsidiary of Datascope Corporation and was a corporate officer of Datascope. He also served as corporate vice president of business development for Datascope from 2001 to 2002. From 1999 to 2001, Mr. Dugan was vice president of marketing for United States Surgical, a division of Tyco Healthcare, and responsible for their Auto Suture and USS/D&G Suture businesses. From 1996 to 1999, he headed business development for United States Surgical during a period when it made numerous acquisitions, investments and divestitures. Mr. Dugan has held management positions in sales, marketing and international with C.R. Bard, Puritan-Bennett and Johnson & Johnson. He is a member of the Board of Directors of RITA Medical Systems, Inc.

Michael J. Schuh, Chief Financial Officer

Schuh joined SonoSite in July 2000. After working with Leasetec Corporation of Boulder, Colorado for approximately 14 years where he was vice president of finance and responsible for financial control and planning for nine worldwide business units. As director of strategic planning and acquisitions for Leasetec from 1995 to 1997, he evaluated acquisitions and joint venture opportunities, and organized the initiation of these operations overseas. Schuh also served in other roles for Leasetec including European finance director and corporate controller. He also has recently acted as chief financial officer and chief operating officer of Capital Associates in Lakewood, Colorado. Prior to Leasetec, Schuh served for four years as senior consultant for Deloitte Haskins & Sells in Denver, Colorado. Schuh holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.

Anne M. Bugge, Vice President, Corporate Affairs

Bugge joined SonoSite in February 2005 and is responsible for developing and managing SonoSite's corporate and investor communications worldwide. Prior to SonoSite, she worked with the EVC Group, an investor and corporate communications firm specializing in advising small cap companies. Bugge also served as Vice President, Corporate and Investor Relations for ATL Ultrasound, Inc. from 1987 until its acquisition by Philips Medical Systems in 1998. She received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Michigan State University, continued academic studies at the University of Oslo and completed the Stanford University Executive Program.

Graham D. Cox, Vice President, International

Cox joined SonoSite in 1999. He was promoted from Vice President, Europe, Middle East and Africa to Vice President, International in 2005. Under Cox's leadership, sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa grew from less than $3 million during his first year to approximately $35 million in 2004 and accounted for approximately 30% of SonoSite's total revenue. Mr. Cox has established direct sales subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Spain and manages over 50 distributor relationships. Involved with the ultrasound industry since 1978, Mr.Cox worked for ATL Ultrasound, now part of Philips and Acuson, now part of Siemens, prior to joining SonoSite. Based outside of London, Mr. Cox received an electronic engineer education and holds an Executive MBA from the International Management Centers Association.

Ronald S. Dickson, Vice President of Government and Corporate Accounts

Dickson joined SonoSite in May 1999 as director of the west coast sales region and served as Vice President of Sales from 2000 to 2002. Prior to that, he was involved with SonoSite when it was a business group within ATL Ultrasound, serving as ATL's liaison to the U.S. military in the evaluation of the early system prototype. While with ATL Ultrasound from 1984 until 1999, he served in various roles with progressing responsibility, including sales representative, regional sales manager and government accounts manager. Prior to ATL, Dickson was a sales representative for United States Surgical Corp. He attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

Lee Dunbar, Vice President, Premium Products Engineering

Dunbar joined SonoSite in 1999 and was promoted to Vice President in 2006. He began as a member of the company's technical team and helped develop the SonoSite 180, the company's and industry's first hand-carried ultrasound product. He has been a key technical contributor in all of the company's subsequent products and prior to this promotion served as Director, Software Engineering. From 1992 to 1996 Mr. Dunbar held engineering management positions at ATL Ultrasound, now part of Philips Medical Systems, and from 1985 to 1992 worked at Quantum Medical Systems, acquired by Siemens AG in 1990. He is named as an inventor on a patent issued in 1995 for color flow imaging algorithms and was honored as an ATL Technical. Mr. Dunbar received both his BS and MS degrees in computer science from Washington State University.

Jim Gilmore, Vice President, Research & Development

Gilmore rejoined SonoSite in 2006. Previously, he served as Global Engineering Manager for Global Ultrasound Probes at GE Healthcare, until his recent decision to rejoin SonoSite. At GE he managed a staff of over 60 engineers and was responsible for all aspects of product definition, design, development and manufacturing engineering support of diagnostic ultrasound transducers. Gilmore was one of the original engineers at SonoSite when the company was spun off from ATL Ultrasound in 1998. He served as Director, Transducer Engineering for six years and played a key role in the development of the SonoSite 180, iLook and TITAN systems. He was honored as an ATL Technical Fellow for innovation and technical leadership and is named as an inventor on three patents for transducer technology. Mr. Gilmore received both his BS in electrical engineering and his MS in biomedical engineering from Drexel University.

Daina L. Graham, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance

Prior to joining SonoSite Graham has been the sole proprietor of a consulting business for the past 12 years, offering services for domestic and international medical device and biotechnology companies to help them meet their regulatory project needs. Experienced with a wide variety of Class I, II and III devices, including sterile products, disposables, pacing devices, implantables, and radiological and electronic equipment, Graham has over 25 years of practical experience in addressing FDA regulations and international regulatory requirements. Previous to starting her own business Graham worked at Quantum Medical Systems (Siemens) and Baxter Healthcare. Graham received her Bachelor of Science and her Master of Science degrees from University of Oregon.

Juin-Jet Hwang, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer

Hwang is responsible for development of corporate technology strategy and oversees the development of architectural, beamforming, signal and image processing technology suitable for hand-carried ultrasound system implementation. Hwang joined ADR Ultrasound in 1980, where he was involved in the development of the ADR 4000 system, a portable array imaging system (ADR Ultrasound merged with ATL in 1983). He served as chief scientist in ATL's Handheld Systems Business Group until its spun-off as SonoSite, Inc. in April 1998. Hwang holds 17 patents and is the author of more than 30 scientific publications and was named an ATL Technical Fellow in Perpetuity in 1988. He holds a master of science degree from the National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, both in electrical engineering.

Marla R. Koreis, Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Administration Officer

Koreis joined SonoSite in September 2003. From 1999 to 2003, Koreis was Director of Human Resources for ImageX, a business-to-business Internet printing company. From 1994 to 1998, Koreis was the Human Resources Executive at SeaMed Corporation, a manufacturer of custom products for the medical device industry. From 1984 to 1994, she served as a human resources manager at several high-tech and healthcare companies. Koreis holds a bachelor of arts degree from Western Washington University.

David Levesque, Vice President, Global Learning

Levesque joined SonoSite in 2004. Previously, he was Director of Training and Education at Philips Medical Systems (formerly Advanced Technology Laboratories) for 13 years. During that time, he was responsible for the development and implementation of sales training initiatives and strategies designed to improve sales effectiveness and impact sales results. In addition, he played a major role in creating dynamic customer education programs and led the effort in the development of self-directed web based learning for sonographers and physicians globally. Levesque has been in the medical imaging business since 1979 and holds a Masters Degree from the University of Iowa.

John Lowell, Vice President, Operations

Prior to joining SonoSite, Lowell was VP-Operations at Advanced Input Devices, a supplier of product development services and user interface subassemblies to many major medical device companies. From 1989 to 1996 he was at ATL Ultrasound in a variety of roles in both system and transducer manufacturing. Prior to ATL Lowell spent 8 years in product design and process development at Tektronix. Lowell holds a Bachelor and Masters degree in Mechanical engineering from Montana State University.

Dieter Schwartmann, Vice President, Europe

Schwartmann joined SonoSite in 2005. Previously, Mr. Schwartmann was Vice President and board member of Aloka Holding Europe AG, a leading Japanese ultrasound manufacturer and distributor. He also served as Vice President of Europe for ATL Ultrasound, Inc., now part of Phillips Medical Systems. A German national, Mr. Schwartmann was a founder and served as General Manager for nine years of Sonotron GmbH, an ultrasound distributor and service provider, and as regional sales manager for ultrasound and other medical products for Kontron Medical GmbH. Additionally, he worked with Beckman Instruments in Germany and Carl Zeiss GmbH, a maker of medical optical instruments.

Marcus Y. Smith, Vice President, Corporate Development

Mr. Smith joined SonoSite in August 2007. Previously, Mr. Smith was Senior Director, Strategy and Business Development with Philips Medical Systems (PMS), where he was responsible for directing strategy and business development efforts for Patient Monitoring and Cardiac Care, a $1 billion medical technology division of PMS. From 2000 to 2003, Mr. Smith led JPMorgan's European logistics investment banking practice as Vice President, Investment Banking for the firm and advised major corporate and government clients on strategic alternatives in the logistics and transportation sectors. He originated and executed a broad range of transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic alliances, equity, debt and derivatives. Prior to JPMorgan, Mr. Smith held management positions with Schroder & Co., Inc.(now part of Citigroup) and Xerox Corporation. He received his BA from Duke University of North Carolina and both his MBA and MA in international affairs from Columbia University of New York.

Kathy Surace-Smith, Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Surace-Smith joined SonoSite in October 2002. From 1996 to August 2002, she was General Counsel at Metawave Communications, a telecommunications equipment provider. Prior to that, Surace-Smith served as International Counsel for Alcatel Telecom in Paris and as Counsel at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London. After receiving her law degree from Columbia University, where she served as editor of the Columbia Law Review, she was in private practice with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. She received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University.

David G. Willis, Vice President, Competitive Strategy And Innovation

Willis first joined SonoSite in 1999 and was instrumental in shaping the product direction and market positioning of the company's first product, the 180 system and led the successful global launch of the TITAN system. Willis was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Ultrasonix, a privately held diagnostic ultrasound company based in Canada, from 2003 until 2006 when he rejoined SonoSite in his current position. Willis' ultrasound career spans over 20 years and includes both clinical and corporate experience. From 1989 to 1999, Willis worked at ATL Ultrasound, now part of Philips Medical Systems, where he held positions of increasing responsibility for clinical marketing and international sales. He was also a sonographer at the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg, Canada, is a registered medical sonographer (RDMS,RDCS) and has completed the Executive Education Program at the Wharton School of Business.
